George FLoyd was killed by Minneapolis POlice on May 25, 2020. In the days after floyd’s death the third police precinct in south minneapolis became the epicenter of what would amount to a global protest against police violence.
AS FLOYD’S FAMILY AND FRIENDS MOURNED HIS LOSS, PEOPLE CONTINUED TO PROTEST IN THE STREETS OF MINNESOTA. A MEMORIAL AT THE SITE WHERE HE WAS KILLED CONTINUED TO GROW AS IT BECAME A MEETING PLACE FOR PEOPLE LOOKING TO PAY THEIR RESPECTS AS WELL AS A HUB FOR ART, MUSICAL PERFORMANCES, AND RELIGIOUS CEREMONY.
In 2021 the city of minneapolis prepared for the trial of former police officer derek chauvin, charged with murder in the death of george floyd. national guard members were called in to fortify the area around the courthouse. chauvin was eventually convicted on all three charges leveraged against him by the state of minnesota, community members celebrated outside the courthouse and that night at george floyd square.
